Exchange semester, ELISAVA School of Design and Engineering in Barcelona – Self data, personal project – Semester project 2024/2025
Task:
Create an interactive installation that tells a story and emerges from a critical reflection on internet infrastructures. The piece should expose an issue that makes you uncomfortable and serve as a proposal for Sónar+D 2025, a festival focused on music, technology, innovation, and creativity.
Result:
<THE_C**KIE_L@B> is an interactive quiz that encourages people to reflect on how cookies enhance their online experience—at the cost of personal privacy. The quiz presents thought-provoking questions about data sharing and online behavior, designed to feel intrusive, much like cookies themselves. At the end, participants receive a personalized digital cookie that reflects their online habits, along with a printed receipt to take home.
This installation serves as a reminder of how much data we willingly share, often without fully understanding the implications. Many internet users accept cookies without realizing the extent of the information they are giving away. In today’s digital landscape, convenience often outweighs concerns about privacy.
What I have learned:
This project has given me a deeper understanding of how cookies function and how frequently I accept them without understanding the true extent of what I am agreeing to, particularly third-party cookies, which track and tailor online experiences based on user behavior.
It has been a challenge to use interaction design as a method to communicate this issue, especially in the context of an exhibition that needs to be both educational and accessible. Through this project, I have learned how a complex topic can be made engaging and understandable through metaphors and visual storytelling. Additionally, I have gained insight into different types of cookie codes and their distinct functions.
