Task (self-chosen, under the theme “more social”):

How can NRK TV create a stronger sense of community, closeness, and shared viewing by introducing a social layer into the platform?

Result:

The concept Krets on NRK TV is an optional, closed layer on top of the platform that aims to make TV viewing more social again—similar to how it once was, when people gathered around fixed broadcast times and shared common references in everyday life. Today, we watch TV whenever it suits us, and while streaming has given us more freedom, it has also made the TV experience more isolated. Through personal recommendations and nuanced tags, users can recommend series and individual episodes to a small, curated circle of close relationships. This creates a sense of social presence and shared viewing, without NRK TV becoming a social media platform.

What I have learned:
I have learned that wording plays a major role in how a social layer is perceived, and in preventing it from developing into a social media platform. The choice of the term Krets has been central, along with the decision that a circle consists only of a few, close relationships. I have also learned that how a project is presented greatly influences how it is understood. We therefore spent time communicating a more internal and humorous perspective, to clarify how a culture of recommendations and tags could work in practice. At the same time, the project made it clear how difficult it is to anticipate actual use before a solution is realized.
