Mia Health

Teamwork with Ingrid Holsten

Collaboration with Mia Health, which is developed in collaboration with NTNU and SINTEF. It uses heart rate data to calculate an Activity Quotient (AQ) and provides personalized health guidance, helping users understand their activity level and gain insights into VO₂ max, fitness age, and health benefits.

Interaction design - Teamwork - 6 weeks - School project 2025

Task:
How might we design a personalized and motivating data experience in Mia Health that turns the user’s health journey into an engaging story?

Result:
The result of the project was a redesigned AQ display in the Mia app that makes earning few or no AQ points feel less discouraging. Instead of showing users a blank or confusing screen, we introduced a more emotional and flexible visual language, using a mountain (already a familiar part of the app) to represent progress, no matter the level. We also developed support components that explain AQ, suggest activities, and give feedback based on user effort. Our testing showed that wording, visual framing, and contextual support significantly impact user motivation.

What I have learned:
Through this project, I learned how important it is to design for different types of motivation. Small changes, like saying “no AQ yet” instead of “0 AQ”, can make a big difference. I also gained insight into how emotional and meaningful visual elements, like the mountain metaphor, can enhance the user experience. The process showed how essential it is to combine clear communication, flexibility, and guidance, especially in complex health apps where users don’t always get instant rewards for their effort.
